Chilling Developments

So it's been 95 degrees and ridiculously humid. I'm talking instant sweat the second you go outside. It's hard to handle as we haven't had a day over 90 degrees in over a year up here. (Global Warming? WHAT global warming?!?) Then to make it even more fun for myself, I take a trip down to Oklahoma for a few days where it's 105. I come back to Wisconsin and wake up the next morning to...... 65 degrees? Yep! It had dropped all the way back down to the 60s, and was in the 50s overnight. We went to my son's baseball game and people had sweatshirts and blankets on. It was once again a beautiful fall day--only this time at the end of June!

So now no one knows what to wear, what to expect or what to do. The kids can't play in the pool. We've had to pull out our jackets again. Some people have turned their furnaces back on.

Me? I'm watching hockey videos from this last season. I may as well get totally into the spirit of the "season."

Jingle bells, jingle bells......

A Pain in the Neck.

My neck hurts.

I'm not sure what I did but the left side of my neck, sort of under and behind my ear, is incredibly stiff and sore. In order to look to my left I have to turn my whole upper body in that direction. (It's made driving LOTS of fun!) And since I've spent the day turning my body like that, now my back is hurting. And I had my daughter's T-Ball practice to coach tonight, so most of the rest of my body is hurting now too. I'm basically one giant pain! (As many have told me before...)

I'm seriously considering taking some of those back pain pills you see advertised on TV, but I'd have to drive to the store to get them (a painful experience since several turns are involved) and I don't like how they make you feel--pretty much zombie-ish for the rest of the day. But the pain is getting worse, so I may have to do something. Maybe a heating pad.

Speaking of heat, I'm trying to keep my new chicks warm. We picked up 6 new little baby chickens today. They're in a box in the garage. They're really cute right now, but they get ugly fast. Once they start growing up, they get that sort of 7th grade gangly look and their feathers come in slowly in little bunches so that they look like they're diseased for a while. I'm hoping these little guys will be as productive as the last bunch I bought. I got 6-8 eggs every day from my 8 hens for over 2 years! That's a lot of eggs for such a small herd. Or flock. Or pride. Whatever you call a bunch of chickens. (Brood?)

I'll post pics of the little babes as soon as I get them off my camera.

Well, I'm going to try and find a heating pad. Or maybe a glass of wine. Or some aspirin. SOMEthing to kill the pain.

A Beautiful Fall Day

Today was breezy, a bit chilly, and somewhat cloudy. It was a day when thoughts turn to college football games, pumpkin pie, Halloween and Thanksgiving. All in all, it was a perfect fall day.

Unfortunately, it's the middle of May.

That's the way Spring works here in Central Wisconsin--we had frost warnings last night even as people are planting their gardens and mowing their lawns for the first time this year. Some may say that it's irritating, this uncertain weather, never knowing if you should wear short sleeves or pack a winter coat. But I like to think of it as adventurous, mysterious. Each day is a surprise and you just enjoy them as they come.

Of course, it does make things like Spring cleaning and gardening a bit difficult. We've planned on cleaning out our garage and planting our garden for the last several weekends. But then it's been so cold each weekend that we stay inside and have hot chocolate instead.

But some things that are scheduled for Spring happen regardless of the weather. Like softball practice for my 11-year-old daughter. Even though we're all bundled up with sweatshirts and jackets, we're still hitting, throwing, and attempting to slide into second base. (The extra padding is nice since most of the girls don't know how to slide too well. It's more of a bounce than a slide.)

Tomorrow morning we'll be back on the diamond, throwing and catching and trying to stay warm as we have a final practice before our first game on Monday. And right now it's raining. Oh goody!

Happy Spring!

First Post!

Well, here we go...

It's a cold and gloomy day here in the great white middle-of-nowhere land. It was in the 70s two days ago and now we're wearing jackets with our shorts. Gotta keep wearing the shorts once you put them on in spring. If you go back to pants, then spring will NEVER show up! So we're shivering as we welcome springtime.

Tomorrow is Mother's Day, which will be weird this year, since my mother died a couple weeks ago. It will be interesting to see how I react. Not that I ever made a big deal of Mother's Day before. Usually, on Saturday, I would think, "I should call my mom tomorrow. And I wish I'd gotten her flowers or sent a card or something." Then, on Monday, I'd think, "Gee, I wish I would have called my mother yesterday since I never sent her flowers or a card." So this year, I'll probably think about missing her on Monday when I realize that I should have remembered her on Sunday, and then I'll realize that she's not there anymore.

Like I said, it'll be weird.

I have a contract to write a 31 day devotional that's due next year, but I'm hoping to start on it soon. And I'll continue to fiddle with my current WIP (that's Work-in-Progress, for you non-writer types--also known as "normal people") that currently has no name and no real plot, just a few snippets of what I hope are amusing anecdotes.

And I also want to get this blog filled with all the cool graphics, pictures, and links that I see on other blogs. But that will take a while since I have the Web design savvy of small dog. A very small dog. I own two small dogs and they can't do a thing on the Internet. Though they have done a few things on my computer desk, but that's more info than you want to know.

That's all for now.
